Premation vs Adobe Animate
Adobe Animate is Adobe's 2D animation application for cartoons, banner ads, games and interactive web content, with frame-by-frame drawing, bones and publishing to HTML5 Canvas, WebGL and other targets. Adobe has put it in maintenance mode: it stays available with security and bug fixes, and no new features are planned.
Across the 9 areas below, Adobe Animate is ahead on 2, the two are level on 1, and Premation is ahead on 6. The 2 are listed first: a comparison you can trust is one that says where it loses.
Pick Adobe Animate if
- You draw your animation frame by frame. Animate is built for hand-drawn character animation; Premation has brush and paint tools but no frame-by-frame drawing workflow.
- The deliverable is interactive: a banner that reacts to the mouse, a game screen, eLearning content, published to HTML5 Canvas or WebGL with code inside the project. Premation has no interactive output.
- You already have years of Animate files and a pipeline around them. Premation does not open them.
Pick Premation if
- Your animation is keyframed rather than drawn: vector shapes, text, logos, explainers, characters rigged with bones, IK and puppet meshes.
- You need video and effects as well as animation: footage, motion tracking, 275 effects, 3D cameras and lights, and export to ProRes with alpha, HDR or Lottie.
- You want free, open-source software that runs on Linux too, and a tool that is still adding features.
