Premation vs Natron
Natron is a free, open-source node-based compositor for visual effects, with OpenFX plugin support, rotoscoping and tracking, Python scripting and a 32-bit float linear colour pipeline. Its latest stable release is 2.5.0, from November 2022.
Across the 9 areas below, Natron is ahead on 5, the two are level on 2, and Premation is ahead on 2. The 5 are listed first: a comparison you can trust is one that says where it loses.
Pick Natron if
- You composite shots with nodes: keying, roto, paint and multi-layer work in a graph. Premation is layer-based and has no node graph.
- Your pipeline relies on OpenFX plugins or Python scripting. Premation supports neither.
- You need Linux, or a headless renderer on a render farm.
Pick Premation if
- The job is motion design: keyframed layers, text animators, shape operators, 2D rigs, Lottie. Natron is built for compositing shots, not for designing motion.
- You want After Effects' model and shortcuts rather than a node graph.
- You want a tool with current releases. Premation is pre-1.0 and its engine is new, but it ships often.
