Auto-reframe video for vertical and square

One edit, every aspect ratio

The same video goes to YouTube, Reels and a square feed, and cropping the middle of a wide frame loses the subject. Auto-reframe makes a new composition at the target ratio that instances the original and pans to follow the subject, so the edit stays editable.

How to do it

  1. 01

    Finish the wide edit

Cut, grade and title the 16:9 composition as usual. Reframing works on the composition, not the source file, so every layer comes along.

  2. 02

    Composition ▸ Auto-Reframe to…

Pick 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 4:3, or type the aspect into the command palette. A new composition is created that instances the original at the new size.

  3. 03

    Check the pan

The subject-following pan is written as keyframes on the instance, jumping cleanly at cuts. Adjust any keyframe where you disagree with it.

  4. 04

    Export each

Queue the original and the reframes together; the render queue runs them one after another in a child process.

Questions

Does it move titles too?
Titles are layers in the original composition, so they come along inside the instance. Re-position any that need to sit differently in the tall frame.
Does the source file get modified?
No. Nothing touches the footage or the original composition; the reframe is a new composition that references it.
