Export HDR video (HDR10 and HLG)
HDR10 and HLG, encoded from float frames
HDR delivery needs more than a tag on an SDR file. Premation draws HDR exports into a half-float surface without clipping at white, converts to BT.2020, and encodes 10-bit HEVC with the PQ or HLG transfer.

The panel that does it
The editor’s own panel, rebuilt on its chrome. It works: drag, toggle, queue.
How to do it
- 01
Decide between HDR10 and HLG
HDR10 uses the PQ curve with static metadata and suits streaming and HDR displays. HLG is the broadcast choice and degrades gracefully on SDR screens.
- 02
Check your ffmpeg
Both formats need an ffmpeg with the libx265 encoder. Without it the export falls back to H.264 High 10 and says so.
- 03
Pick the format in Export
File ▸ Export, then HDR10 or HLG. An HDR export overrides the project's viewer transform, so a preview transform is never applied twice.
- 04
Queue it and check on an HDR display
The result is an MP4. Working-space white is placed at 203 nits and the picture is clipped at a 1000-nit mastering display, so judge the highlights on a real HDR screen.
Questions
- Can an HDR export have a transparent background?
- No. An HDR delivery is opaque. For alpha with high precision use ProRes 4444 or an EXR sequence.
- Does it support Dolby Vision?
- No. The two HDR formats are HDR10 and HLG.
- Can I render HDR from the command line?
- Yes. premation render with --format hdr10 or --format hlg writes the same 10-bit HEVC file.
